Many of us had a favorite place as children, whether it was in our mind, a physical space,
or both. I loved to read books under the dining room table. It was well lit, even through the
sheer tablecloth, and I liked the sense of being enclosed by the chair legs. Although I didn’t
think of it as such, it was my healing place.

Healing usually involves spiritual, mental, and physical elements. Food for the Heart offers
writings and photos to provide an opportunity for quiet and reflection. Food for the Mind,
Food for Smart Patients, and Food for the Body offer material to help educate people so they
can make informed decisions about their mental and bodily health and live as well as possible
for as long as possible.

When we heal from within, opening room to allow us to focus on education, decision-making,
nutrition, and therapeutic activity, we open the door to planning for tomorrow, regardless of
how many tomorrows are waiting for us.

Food for the Future has thoughts on creating healing physical environments --- considering
things such as the type and number of pieces in a room, the amount of light and sound, and the
type of scent we use, if any--- so we can weigh individual tastes against knowledge about the
needs and sensitivities of people with increased fall risk, poor attention and/or memory,
emotional volatility, or other problems and decide what environment is most likely to be
supportive at any point in time.

In addition, there is a list of some books that have proved useful to friends and family, as well as
music shown to be therapeutic for people with certain neurological/psychiatric conditions.
Finally, I share some things that I simply like. They’ve been healing in my life. They may or may
not be useful for you, but hopefully they will get you thinking about what will best help you chart
your future.
